Nagpur Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 48 parliamentary constituencies of the State of Maharashtra in western India.

This constituency is in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. This urban general constituency has an estimated population of Scheduled Caste around 19.76%.

The estimated population of Scheduled Tribes in this constituency is approximately 7.7%. The estimated literacy level of Nagpur constituency is 91.92%.

The constituency  has spread over the city and some parts of Nagpur district.

The Nagpur constituency came into existence in 1952. This constituency has 6 Assembly segments.

These segments include Nagpur South West, Nagpur South, Nagpur East, Nagpur Central, Nagpur West, and Nagpur North.

Previous Elections Stats of Nagpur Parliamentary Constituency

In 2019, Nagpur parliamentary constituency has a total number of 2161096 eligible electors. At the time, the total number of valid votes were 1186051.

In this election, a candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party, Nitin Jairam Gadkari received a total number of approximately 660,221 votes.

While his opponent, the candidate of INC, Nana Patole secured a total number of around 444212 votes.

As a result, Nitin won the elections by 216009 votes. There were a total of 31 candidates who stood from the seat.

2014 Elections Stats

During 2014 elections, the Nagpur constituency had a total number of 1900784 eligible electors.

The number of total valid votes at the time is found to be around 1085038. In this election, a total number of 34 candidates stood from the seat.

However, Nitin Jairam Gadkari, the member of Bharatiya Janata party emerged victorious as he received 587767 votes.

On the other hand, his opponent, Vilas Muttemwar, the candidate of Indian National Congress, received a total of around 302919 votes.

Resulting, Gadkari became the MP from the seat by defeating an INC candidate with a margin of 2,84,848 votes.

At the time the total votes polled in the constituency were found as 26.25%.

2009 Elections Stats

Nagpur parliamentary constituency in 2009 elections had a total number of 1738920 eligible electors, while the total number of valid votes at the time were found as 755369.

In this election, a candidate of Indian National Congress Muttemwar Vilasrao Baburaoji secured a total number of 315148 votes.

While his opponent, Purohit Banwarilal Bhagwandas, the candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party, received a total of 290749 votes.

Which resulted in INC candidate Vilasrao Baburaoji emerging victorious and became the MP from the seat by a margin of 24399 votes.

Current MP of Nagpur

The Present MP from this parliamentary constituency is Nitin Jairam Gadkari, who’s the candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party.

In this election, Nitin secured a total number of around 660,221 votes. While his opponent, Nana Patole, a candidate of Indian National Congress received a total of 4,44,212 votes.

As a result, Gadkari won the elections and emerged victorious from the Seat.

Apart from representing Nagpur parliamentary constituency, he is also the current Minister for Road Transport & Highways in the Government of India.

He is known as the longest serving Minister for Road Transport and Highways, who is running his tenure for more than 8 years.

Earlier, he also served as the President of the BJP from 2008 to 2013. He is closely associated with the RSS which is currently headquartered in his home constituency of Nagpur.

Although Gadkari is representing Nagpur constituency, he is a lawyer by occupation.

When was the first Parliamentary elections held in Nagpur

The first election in the Nagpur Parliamentary Constituency took place in the year of 1952. At the time, a candidate of Indian National Congress Party, Anasuyabai Kale won the elections.

Kale emerged victorious in the 1952s elections and became the First MP from the seat of Nagpur.

Later in 1957 elections, She was re-elected as a Member of Lok Sabha for the second time from the seat.

Prior to elections of the Lok Sabha, Anasuyabai had served as the member of Assembly of the Central Provinces and Berar.

In 1937, she also served as the Deputy Speaker of the Central Provinces Legislative Assembly. In 1948, Kale became the President of the All India Women’s Conference.

She is also known as the descendant of The Diwan of Aundh state.

After winning Lok Sabha elections from Nagpur in 1957, the veteran politician died mid-term two years later.
