Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 5 parliamentary constituencies in the region of Jammu and Kashmir in Northern India.

The constituency of Srinagar established in 1967. The total number of electors in this constituency is around 11,06,729.

This rural general constituency has an estimated population of approximately 0.07% Scheduled Caste and an estimated population of around 4.12% Scheduled Tribe.

The estimated literacy level of Srinagar constituency is approximately 63.8%. The Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency is composed of a total of 15 Assembly segments.

These segments include Kangan, Ganderbal, Hazratbal, Zadibal, Eidgah, Khanyar, Habba, Kadal, Amira Kadal, Sonawar, Batmaloo, Chadoora, Budgam, Beerwah, Khan Sahib, and Charari Sharief.

Srinagar Previous Elections with Stats

In 2019, Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency had a total number of 1294671 electors, while the total number of valid votes is around 186832.

In this election, the candidate of Jammu & Kashmir National Conference Party, Farooq Abdullah received a total of 106750 votes.

His opponent, a candidate of Peoples Democratic Party Aga Syed Mohsin secured a total of 36700 votes.

As a result, Abdullah won and became the MP from the seat. Mohsin lost to Farooq by 70050 votes.

In the 2019s elections, there were security situation in the valley, due to which the voter turnout in 2019 is around 13%.

These elections saw a total number of 70 polling booths where not a single vote casted due to the fear of violence.

2017 Elections Stats

In Srinagar constituency there were by-elections held in 2017. In these elections a total number of 5 candidates stood from the seat.

At the time, Farooq Abdullah, the candidate of Jammu & Kashmir National Conference Party won and became the MP from the Seat.

As he received a total number of 48,555 votes. Causing result, his opponent, Nazir Ahmad Khan, candidate of JKPDP stood second as he secured a total number of approximate 37,779 votes.

2014 Elections Stats

Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency in 2014s elections had a total number of approximately 1207230 electors.

The total number of valid votes at the time were around 312212. In 2014, a candidate of Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party, Tariq Hameed Karra secured a total of 157923 votes.

On the other hand, his opponent, the candidate of Jammu & Kashmir National Conference Party, Farooq Abdullah received a total of 115643 votes.

Resulting, Hameed won the elections by a margin of 42280 votes and became the MP from the Seat.

Current MP of Srinagar

The Present MP from the seat of Srinagar is Farooq Abdullah, who is also the candidate of Jammu & Kashmir National Conference Party.

Farooq emerged victorious from the seat of Srinagar in 2019 after he secured a total number of 1,06,750 votes.

Abdullah has served as the Chief Minister of the State on several occasions since 1982.

From 2009 to 2014, he has also served as the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy. He first elected to the Lok Sabha from this constituency unopposed in 1980’s general elections.

He is the son of the 1st elected Chief Minister of the State of Jammu and Kashmir and veteran politician, Sheikh Abdullah.

His son, Omar Abdullah is the former Chief Minister of the State of Jammu and Kashmir.

If we talk about the education status of the present MP from the seat, he has completed his degree in MBBS from SMS Medical College, Jaipur.

Later he subsequently traveled to the UK to practice medicine. However, he came back and turned to Politics.

When was the first Parliamentary elections held in Srinagar

The First Parliamentary Elections in Srinagar were held in the year 1967. At the time, the First elections were won by the candidate of Jammu & Kashmir National Conference Party, Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad.

Ghulam won the elections and emerged as the First MP from the seat. Apart from being an MP, he also served as the Prime Minister of Jammu & Kashmir from 1953 to 1964.

Bakshi is one of the founding members of the Nation conference party and rose to be the second in command to the Principal leader Sheikh Abdullah.

In between 1947 to 1953, he served as the Deputy Prime Minister of the State of Jammu & Kashmir.

He is also known as the longest serving Prime Minister of the State, whose rule saw the formulation of the Constitution of Jammu & Kashmir.

He helped in normalisation of relations of the State of Jammu & Kashmir with the Indian government.
