Hamirpur Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 4 parliamentary constituencies in the State of Himachal Pradesh in Northern India.

The constituency of Hamirpur were created in the year 1953. The Hamirpur Lok Sabha constituency presently comprises 17 Vidhan Sabha i.e, Legislative Assembly segments. 

These segments include Dehra, Jaswan-Pragpur, Dharampur, Bhoranj, Sujanpur, Hamirpur, Barsar, Nadaun, Chintpurni, Gagret, Haroli, Una, Kutlehar, Jhanduta, Ghumarwin, Bilaspur and Sri Naina Deviji. 

It is a rural general constituency, which has an estimated population of Scheduled Caste around 23.75% while an estimated population of a Scheduled Tribe approximately 1.46%. 

The literacy rate of the constituency of Hamirpur is around 90%. As per the Census report of 2011, the total population of this constituency is approximately 454,768.

In 2019, Hamirpur parliamentary constituency had a total of around 1362269 eligible electors, while the number of valid votes is found to be around 988765.

In this election, a total number of 12 candidates stood from the seat. However, a candidate of Bharatiya Janata party, Anurag Singh Thakur secured a total of 682692 votes.

While his opponent, Ram Lal Thakur, the candidate of Indian National Congress, received a total of 283120 votes. 

As a Result, Singh emerged the winner and became the MP from the seat by 399572 votes.

2014 Elections Stats 

In 2014s elections, Hamirpur parliamentary constituency had a total of 1247699 eligible electors, while the number of valid votes at the time found as 835205. 

During this election, a total number of 11 candidates stood from the seat, however, a candidate of BJP, Anurag Thakur emerged victorious. 

He received a total of 448035 votes, which is 11.78% of the total votes polled in the constituency.

Anurag’s opponent, an Indian National Congress Party’s candidate, Rajinder Singh Rana received a total of 349632 votes. 

Resulting, Anurag became the MP from the seat by a margin of 98403 votes. In this election, BJP had a vote share of approximately 53.64% from this seat. 

2009 Elections Stats 

In 2009, Hamirpur parliamentary constituency had a total of 1187377 eligible electors, while there were a total of 698739 valid votes. 

A total number of 8 candidates stood from the seat in the 2009 elections. However, BJP’s candidate Anurag Thakur emerged victorious, as he received a total of 373598 votes.

On the other hand, his opponent, a candidate of Indian National Congress Party, Narinder Thakur secured a total of 300866 votes. 

Which resulted in Anurag becoming the MP from the seat with a margin of 72732 votes. In this election, Bharatiya Janata party had a vote share of 53.44%.

Current MP of Hamirpur Lok Sabha Constituency 

The Present Member of Parliament from the seat of Hamirpur constituency is Anurag Thakur, who’s the member of Bharatiya Janata party. 

Aside from representing Hamirpur seat in Lok Sabha, he is also the current Minister of Sports, Youth Affairs.

He is also serving as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting in the Second Modi ministry. 

Earlier he had also served as the Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs. 

He is also known as the long serving Member of Parliament from the State of Himachal Pradesh.

As of now Thakur has represented the State 4 times as an Member of Parliament, being a member of 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th Lok Sabha. 

Apart from being an Politician, he is also known as the former President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

He served the Position of President of the BCCI from May 2015 to February 2017. However, he had to leave the position after the Apex Court order on BCCI governance. 

When was the first Parliamentary elections held in Hamirpur

The first Parliamentary elections in the Constituency of Hamirpur took place in the year 1952, wherein, an independent candidate, Anand Chand emerged victorious. 

His Highness, Raja Sir Anand Chand was the 44th Raja of Bilaspur. He became the first Member of Parliament from this seat.

Previously he represented Bihar as an MP in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India’s Parliament as a member of Indian National Congress. 

Between 1947 to 1948, Chand became a member of the Constituent Assembly of India, which established to draft the Constitution for India. 

Later, in October 1948, Chand were appointed as the Chief Commissioner of the Bilaspur Province of Independent India, it’s a position that he held until 1950. 

He is also known as the First Lok Sabha member from Bilaspur, after it became a State, before merging with the State of Himachal Pradesh. 

In 1971 when the Government of India abolished the privileges and allowances to princely states, Chand moved to London, England, with his family in 1976.
