The former Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav of Uttar Pradesh and the originator of the Samajwadi Party passes at 82 on Monday morning, October 10. Mulayam was shifted to Medanta hospital, ICU in Gurugram after his health deteriorated. According to hospital sources, he was facing difficulty in breathing. He was under the observation of an internal medicine expert at Medanta hospital. After his health worsened, he was moved to ICU on October 2.

SP President and son of Mulayam Akhilesh Yadav, reached the hospital with his wife, Dimple. On October 10, the Twitter handle of the Samajwadi Party Akhilesh Yadav shared that “My father and our Leader are no more”. Also, Several political leaders have expressed deep condolences on the passing of Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Remembering him, Narendra Modi shared on Twitter that “Mulayam ji was a remarkable personality. He was a humble and grounded leader.” President Draupadi Murmu also expressed her deep condolences on Twitter.

Post victory of 2014, the Bhartiya Janata Party could emerge a ringing call for a Congress Mukt Bharat as the great old party has drifted to 44 seats low in Lok Sabha. Before and after, the growth of Regional Satraps in states like Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal was quickening the Congress slide.

But Congress, to its exhausted state and new political order for its win, owes a more to the rise of wrestler turned socialist politician Mulayam Singh Yadav in Uttar Pradesh. In 1989, he did not just win, or the Congress did not just lose. The game was harder.

The undivided UP was 425 assembly seats, strongest against today’s 403. That year Congress served a long-term removal notice by the voters in an electorally most critical state of Uttar Pradesh. In the next few years, Mulayam hijacked the party of its faithful vote bank. The political scenery-changing turning point in history experienced new political owners blitzing in.

Yadav was groomed by the leaders Ram Manohar Lohia and Raj Narain. He elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly in the Legislative Assembly in the year of 1967. Mulayam Singh Yadav got arrested and kept in custody during the Indira Gandhi imposition of emergency. He became the President of Lok Dal in 1980, which became Janata Dal afterwards. Mulayam Singh Yadav: From Wrestle Shaft to Political Base

It was the wrestling and tackle that he got the ticket to politics. Nathu Singh was a powerful leader of the Praja Socialist Party contesting the Assembly poll in 1962. He observed Mulayam during a wrestling time in Nagla Amber and then became his political Guru. Nathu Singh arranged a meeting with socialist Ram Manohar Lohia of the Samyukt Socialist Party. Lohia called for a UP bandh on August 15 1966. Mulayam Singh works very hard at his mentor and Nathu Singh’s command.

Later when Lohia visited Etawah for a public rally, Mulayam managed to unite with Lohia. At that time Mulayam was lohiaite, and his ideology was socialism. In 1967, his candidature put forward for the Jaswant Nagar seat. His competitor was advocate Lakhan Singh, the congressman who entreated Nehru, Shastri and the congress’s role in the freedom struggle. He chose door-to-door for customized campaigns. He stood as a massive killer by securing a 1.03 lakhs vote. Ch Charan Singh was his political idol by 1970.

Mulayam and Bahuguna Together

In 1986 when Chandan Singh fell sick, Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna acquired the party. A group of Lok Dal convinced Ajit Singh, Chandan Singh’s son, to join as the party’s General Secretary. Frighten Mulayam Singh grab the opportunity. He got sided with Bahuguna. Ajit Singh removed him from the leader of the opposition post in the Uttar Pradesh assembly. On May 26, 1987, Charan Singh died. His death resulted in the split of Lok Dal. That is Lok Dal Ajit Singh and Lok Dal Bahuguna. He dumped the Lok Dal of Ajit Singh and stood becoming the party head of Lok Dal Bahuguna.

Soon after Hemwati and Devilal, the Haryana powerful in Lok Dal was in opposition. Devilal called for a conclave, and Mulayam rejected Hemwati as his mentor and joined the conclave. By the time 1989, Janata Dal had emerged as a united force of opposition parties, and Mulayam was its UP head.

Declination of Upper Caste

1989 was the month of history where there was a declination of upper caste domination. Also, there was a rise in mandalites. On December 5, Mulayam took oath as UP Chief Minister in a public rally. 1990 changed Indian politics, BJP amd Mulayam totally. Frightened by aggressive BJP and challenges created by groups in Delhi, V P Singh declared the implementation of the Mandal Commission Report suggesting 27% reservation in Government jobs and Educational Institutes for OBC.

As the anti-Mandal protests continued to determine, the saffron party launched a Ranbhoomi movement. Appearing as Hindutva poster boy L K Advani aided by BJP strategist Pramod started the Ram Janambhoomi Yatra from Somnath.

On October 21, many Kar Sevaks responded to the plead of Advani and VHP’s Ashok Singhal gathered at Ayodhya. CM Mulayam Singh ordered a barrier to block the access. A Kar Sevak hijacked a bus taking his colleagues and drove around the Babri Masjid through the barricades. Some frantic Kar Sevak was able to climb the Masjid and hoisted a saffron flag.

On Lucknow, Mulayam Singh pressed the button the police opened to fire on Kar Sevaks. Kar Sevaks were cremated to those who died on November 1. They again reassembled on November 2. This was the second time the CM orders for suppression. More Kar Sevaks were killed.

In 1991, Mulayam fought alone and lost in the assembly polls. The SP was born on October 4, 1992. Less than 65 days before the Babri masjid was brought down.

Akhilesh Yadav on Floor

On April 19, 2019, a mass cheered at the arrival of Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati on the floor for the Gathbandhan in decades. By 1995 SP and BSP were like a married couple with bitterness preparing for a rancorous divorce. The wrestler became active and planned to win 31 out of 56 Zilla panchayat chairmanships the BSP totally overthrown. In the 1995 election, Mulayam won three of the four seats despite BSP virtually sabotaging its association partner.

In 1996, Mulayam came in touching distance to becoming Prime Minister. He won 17 Lok Sabha seats. In the 2004 Lok Sabha election, Mulayam was ruling UP. The Atal Ji Government’s shining campaign thrashed across India. Mulayam party won 36 seats. The wrestler turned to teacher, then politician and served as Union Defence Minister in 1996.

Yadav had three degrees in Political Science. A Bachelor of Arts from Karm Kshetra Post-Graduate college in Etawah. A Bachelor in teaching from A K college in Shikohabad and a Master in Arts from B R College in Agra University.

Mulayam started his career as a teacher at Jain Inter College in Karhal in the Mainpur district. The fact is SP patriarch, done his schooling in the same school in 1955. He did his 12th in the same school and joined as a teacher in 1963. There he used to teach Hindi and social science.

Yadav born on 22 November, 1939. He worked for three times non-consecutive terms as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Mulayam also worked as the Minister of Defence of the Government of India. He often mentioned as Netaji by workers and party leaders. His parents were Murti Devi and Sughar Singh Yadav. Mulayam has a sister, Kamla devi and four brothers. Ram Gopal Yadav and Geeta Devi are his cousins.

Controversies   

The crime of rape become an upper-case offence in India after the 2012 Delhi Gang Rape. Yadav opposed this law change, commenting, “Boys will be boys, and they will commit mistakes.” In reaction to the 2014 Badaun Gang rape and Yadav’s comment UN, Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon said “we say no to arrogant and destructive attitudes of boys.” On August 19 2015, Mulayam, for his remarks, summoned by the Judicial Magistrate of Mahoba district in Uttar Pradesh.

Mulayam Yadav Marriage Life

Mulayam got hitched twice. His first wife, Malti Devi, was in an abundant state from 1974 till her death. In May 2003, after complications, while giving birth to their only child Akhilesh Yadav. Akhilesh was CM of Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to 2017.

Mulayam had a relationship with Sadhana Gupta inspite of being with Malti Devi. Gupta was not well known till 2007 when the Indian Supreme Court admitted the relationship. Sadhana had a son named Prateek Yadav from her first marriage. Prateek’s wife, Aparna Visht Yadav, to associate with BJP in 2022. Sadhana gupta died in 2022 after suffering from illness.
