Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 26 Parliamentary constituencies in the North Gujarat region of Gujarat, West India. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is the current Member of Parliament of Gandhinagar.

It is one the most prestigious parliamentary constituencies in India, being represented by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The constituency had also represented by the former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani along with the current Home Minister and former BJP chief Amit Shah.

The constituency of Gandhinagar came into existence in 1967. The first politician who became an MP from this seat is a candidate of INC, Somchandbhai Solanki.

It is an urban general constituency that has an estimated population of Scheduled Caste around 11.36%.

The estimated population of Scheduled Tribe from the constituency is approximately 1.95%. The literacy level of Gandhinagar is approximately 85.4%.

Previous Elections result of Amit Shah Lok Sabha Constituency

Speaking about previous elections, in the year 2019, Gandhinagar parliamentary constituency had a total of 1945772 eligible electors. The total number of valid votes at the time is around 1284090. In this election, the candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party, Amit Shah emerged winner. Amit Shah became the MP from this seat after receiving a total of around 894624 votes.

As a result, his opponent and the candidate of Indian National Congress, Dr C J Chavda came second as he received approximately 337610 votes.

Amit Shah defeated Dr. Chavda by 557014 votes along with 16 other candidates who stood from various political parties.

2014 Elections Stats

In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, a candidate of BJP, L K Advani won the seat while securing a total of around 773539 votes.

Advani’s opponent, Kiritbhai Ishvarbhai Patel, the candidate of INC, secured a total of approximately 290418 votes.

Resulting LK Advani defeated Patel by a margin of around 483121 votes. In the year, the constituency had a total of 1733972 electors.

The calculated number of valid votes were approximate 1135495. In the election, BJP had a vote share of 68.12% from Gandhinagar’s seat.

There were a total of 19 candidates who stood from the seat from various political parties.

Elections Stats of 2009

Coming to 2009 elections, Gandhinagar constituency had a total of around 1555709 eligible electors.

The BJP’s candidate, L K Advani won the seat to become the MP from the constituency as he secured a total of 434044 votes.

His opponent, the candidate of Indian National Congress, Patel Sureshkumar Chaturdas received a total of 312297 votes.

Causing the result of Advani defeating Patel with a margin of around 121747 votes, which is 15.40% of the total votes polled.

Bharatiya Janata party had a vote share of 54.89% and the total number of valid votes this time were 790737.

There were a total of 19 candidates who participated in the elections in 2009.

Amit Shah current MP of Gandhinagar

The Present MP of Gandhinagar parliamentary constituency is Amith Shah, who’s also serving as the Minister of Home Affairs since 2019.

Amith Amit Anil Chandra Shah, is also serving as the first Minister of Co-operation of India since 2021.

Shah had served as the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party from 2014 to 2020.

He had also been the Chairman of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) since 2014.

Previously, he had been elected as a member of the upper house of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, from Gujarat in 2017.

Sworn in at the age of 54, he is the youngest serving full-time Home Minister.

He is also known as the chief strategist of the BJP and a close aide to Narendra Modi. He assumed parliamentary office on May 23, 2019.

Amith Shah started his political career during his college days where he served as a member of the ABVP, the student wing of the RSS in 1983.

At the age of 18 years, he secured a position and joined the BJP in 1987. Since 1989, he has fought 28 elections to various local bodies.

When was the First Parliamentary Elections Held in Gandhinagar?

The Gandhinagar constituency came into existence in 1967 and the first elections of the seat also took place in the same year.

In the first election from this seat, Somchandbhai Solanki, the candidate of INC, emerged victorious and became the first MP from the seat.

Solanki secured a total of around 156,148 votes and became the MP.

While his opponent, K. U. Parmar, the candidate of RPI, received 126,308 votes which resulted in the defeat of Parmar to Somchandbhai.

Aside from being a politician, Solanki also worked as a social worker as well as a Chairman for Krishna Kunj Cooperative Housing Society Ltd.
