Lucknow parliamentary constituency is one of the 80 Parliamentary constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. It is an assembly seat in Awadh region of Lucknow district of the State.

Lucknow Central is one of the 2 Lok Sabha constituencies that lies largest in the capital city of the State, Lucknow. The seat is categorised into 2 parts such as General and Urban.

The Lucknow Parliamentary Constituency established in 1952. The Assembly constituency comprises Lucknow West, Lucknow North, Lucknow East, Lucknow Central and Lucknow Cantt areas.

As per a report of Delimitation Commission 2008, the General Assembly constituency here has an estimated population of Scheduled Caste is 9.83%.

As per the same report, an estimated population of Scheduled Tribe in the General Assembly constituency is 0.02%. According to the Census report of 2011, the estimated literacy level of the district is 77.29%.

Previous Elections Stats of Lucknow Parliamentary Constituency

The last elections held in Lucknow parliamentary constituency took place in 2019, where Rajnath Singh emerged victorious after securing a total of 633,026 votes and become the MP.

At the time, Rajnath won the seat against 3 other candidates of different political parties. Rajnath’s opponent Poonam Sinha received a total of 2,85,724 votes and became second from the seat.

Poonam lost from Rajnath by 347302 votes. In 2019, Lucknow assembly constituency had a total of 2040367 electors, while the total number of valid votes were 1116445.

In the 2014 elections, Lucknow parliamentary constituency had a total of 1949956 electors, while the total number of valid votes were counted as 1033883.

At the time, the candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party, Rajnath Singh again emerged victorious while securing a total of 561106 votes.

Resulting, his opponent and the candidate of Indian National Congress, Prof Rita Bahuguna Joshi, who also stood from the seat became second as she received a total of 288357 votes. Prof Rita lost to Singh with a margin of 272749 votes.

Speaking of 2009 elections, Lucknow parliamentary constituency had a total number of 1653123 electors, while the total number of valid votes at the time were 584051.

In 2009’s elections, once again Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate, Lal Ji Tandon emerged victorious and became the MP from the seat.

As a result Lal Ji’s opponent and candidate of Indian National Congress party Rita Bahuguna Joshi stood second from the seat as she received 163127 votes.

At the time, Lal Ji Tandon secured a total number of 204028 votes. Resulting Rita lost to Tandon by a margin of 40901 votes.

Profile of the Current MP

The Current MP from the Lucknow Assembly constituency seat is Rajnath Singh, who’s also serving as the Defence Minister of India.

Rajnath is the former President of Bharatiya Janata party. He has previously served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh as well as the Cabinet Minister during Vajpayee Government.

Under the Prime Ministership of Atal Bihar Vajpayee, Singh had also served as the Minister of Road Transport and Highways and Agriculture.

When the Modi Government came in force in the centre, Rajnath Singh selected as the first Home Minister.

He had started his career in politics as a youth leader from the State of Uttar Pradesh. Singh is a veteran leader of BJP, who started his career through RSS Swayamsevak.

When was the First Parliamentary Elections Held in Lucknow

The First Parliamentary Elections in Lucknow took place in 1952.

At the time, the candidate of the Indian National Congress, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit won the Lucknow Assembly constituency seat by receiving a total of 1,02,764 votes.

At the time, the calculated vote turnout came in % that were 1,48,569 which is 42.03%. During that time Vijaya fought off 3 other candidates who stood from the several other political parties.

However, She emerged victorious from the seat, resulting in the candidate of the ABJS party Har Govind Dayal, becoming second after securing a total of 35,112 votes from the seat.

Speaking of Pandit’s Political career, she also selected as the 6th Governor of Maharashtra from 1962 to 1964 as well as the 8th President of the United Nations General Assembly from 1953 to 1954.

After this achievement, she became the first woman to be appointed to either post. Pandit’s brother Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of Independent India, her niece Indira Gandhi, the first Female Prime Minister of India and her grand-nephew Rajeev Gandhi, the 6th PM of India.

After serving as India’s envoy to the Soviet Union, the United States and the United Nations, Vijaya Lakshmi went to London as India’s most important diplomat.
