On Wednesday, September 28, the Centre imposed a 5 year ban on the PFI i.e, the Popular Front of India. The Centre banned the PFI and its associated entities under the Anti-terror law – the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. Union Home Ministry announced a tribunal to assess whether the restrictions on PFI were legitimate, if there wasn’t enough evidence for the ban.

The associated organization with the PFI includes:

Rehab India Foundation (RIF), Campus Front of India (CFI), All India Imams Council (AIIC), National Confederation of Human Rights Organisation (NCHRO), National Women’s Front , Junior Front, Empower, India Foundation, Rehab Foundation, Kerala.

What Did Officials Said? 

According to a statement given by officials, the home ministry was responsible for the coordination between the central and state agencies. As per the same statement, the ministry was also responsible for the monitoring of the law and order situation.

In its notification, the ministry said that some of the founding members of PFI were the leaders of SIMI. SIMI means the Students Islamic Movement of India. Now PFI has been linked with JMB i.e, Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh. The SIMI and JMB, both are reportedly prescribed organization. These groups have now linked with the global terrorist groups including ISIS.

The Order of the ministry reads, “Whereas, the Central government, having regard to the above circumstances, “is of the firm opinion that it is necessary to declare the PFI and its associates or affiliates or fronts association outlawed with immediate effect. In exercise of the powers conferred by the provisons to sub-section (3) of sect 3 of the said Act, declares it as outlawed.”

In a statement, the PFI’s political front, the Social Democratic Party of India said, “Ban on PFI and associates is part of an undeclared Emergency by the BJP regime.” In a statement, the officials explained that as SDPI is a political party, it was not in the ambit of UAPA ban. 

When PFI was established?

Popular Front of India was established in 2006. The Party was established as a result of the Union of the National Development Front and the Karnataka Forum for Dignity (KFD). The organization identified itself as, “neo-social movement committed to empowering people to promote justice, freedom, and security.”

About PFI 

PFI is an Indian Muslim political organization. It is reportedly an extreme and exclusivist brand of Muslim minority practised politics. 

What does the PFI do?

The PFI Promotes accommodations for Muslims. Back in 2012, the group staged extreme demonstrations in opposition to the detention of people under UAPA statute. The government has reportedly frequently found PFI taking part in anti-social and anti-national activities. 

As per reports, in 2012, the Kerala govt reported that the group was a revival of the Indian Mujahideen affiliate SIMI. The PFI was banned 5 years ago too by the Chhattisgarh government. The ban was later lifted by the High Court. The group’s name has reportedly been linked with many riots in Delhi and other places. 

In addition to, the group has been accused on a number of occasions of having ties with terrorist groups such as Taliban and Al-Qaeda. The Chairman of PFI is OMA Abdul Salam, while the Vice Chairman is E.M Abdul Rahiman.

MHA Order

According to the MHA, PFI have been working covertly to increase the radicalization. By promoting a sense of insecurity in the country. As per the ministry orders, it was stated that the Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat govt had recommended a ban on PFI. The order further stated that the PFI and its associates have been involved in violent terrorist activities. They were involved to create a reign of terror, endangering the security of the state. The notification alleged that Popular Front of India is trying to enforce a terror based regressive regime. This is their main agenda to continue to propagate anti-national sentiments. 

According to the home ministry, investigations by central agencies have established clear links between PFI and its associates.

In the investigation it is reportedly found out that the Rehab India Foundation collects funds through Popular Front of India members. Moreover, it is also stated that these associates enhance its reach among different sections of society such as youth, students, women, lawyers etc.

Similarly, in another notification, Centre empowered the state govt to take necessary action against groups affiliated with Popular Front of India. The possible action that they state against them could be seizure of places and arrest of their members. According to the ministry, these associates work on a ‘hub and spoke’ model.

According to the orders, the group operates openly as a socio-economic educational and political organization. While the investigations have revealed that the Popular Front of India is repeatedly engaged in violent and subversive acts.

As per the order the criminal acts done by PFI are: 

Chopping off the hand of a college professor, killings of persons associated with organizations espousing other faiths. Obtaining explosives to target prominent people and places and destruction of public property, etc.

Further, the notification also mentioned a few names of people who were alleged victims of PFI’s “brutal” violence. Most of these victims belong to Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
