Previously he served as the 14th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and a Central Indian State from 1993 to 2003 for two terms. Earlier, he was the minister of Chief Minister Arjun Singh’s cabinet between 1980 and 1984. Pragya Singh Thakur defeated him for the Bhopal Lok sabha seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. When he was appointed as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, he resigned from the Lok sabha in 1993. As a congress MLA, his brother Laxman Singh was elected in 1993. In the Indian General Election in 1984, Singh elected as a member of the 8th Lok sabha of the lower house of the Parliament of India. In the constituency which was created, he was the first congress politician to win. He won by 150,000 votes. But he lost the seat to Pyarelal khandelwal of BJP (Bhartiya Janata party) by 57,000 votes in the general elections of 1989. But he retrieved it in 1991 by becoming a member of the 10th Lok sabha.
