Justice Chandrachud will be in service as the Chief Justice of India for two years till November 10, 2024. Judges of the Supreme Court retire at the age of 65. He succeeds Uday Umesh Lalit, who had advocated him as his successor to the centre on October 11. President Draupadi Murmu had assigned him as the next CJI on October 17.

He is all set to become the 50th head of the Indian Judiciary on Wednesday when Draupadi Murmu regulates the oath of office to him at Rashtrapati Bhawan. His eminent father, YV Chandrachud, was long-lasting, serving as Chief Justice of India (CJI). And remained in the chair from February 22 1978 to July 11 1985. Justice Chandrachud will work as the CJI for two years till November 10, 2024. Justice Chandrachud born on 11 November 1959. And upraised to the top court on May 13 2016. He has been a member of several constitution benches and milestone verdicts of the top court, including on matters relating to the Right to Privacy and Adultery and the Ayodhya land dispute. 

Justice Chandrachud was also a member of benches which conveyed path-breaking judgements on decriminalising same-sex relations. After it partly battered down section 377 of the IPC, the validity of the Sabarimala issue and the Adhaar scheme. Recently a bench headed by him broadened the scope of the Medical Termination of the Pregnancy (MTP) Act. And the interrelated rules to include unmarried women for abortion between 20-24 weeks of pregnancy.

After over a period at the Bombay HC, Justice Chandrachud assigned as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court on October 31, 2013. He raised as a Supreme Court judge on May 13, 2016. 

The delay in making judge selection comes at a time when the Supreme Court is in terrible need of its full strength of judges. And to listen to the cases before five running constitution benches. And gear the overwhelming number of pending cases. Justice Chandrachud is ready to inherit seven vacancies in the SC schedule at the start of his term as CJI on November 9, 2022. Along with 12 more judges ready to retire during his 2-year administration.

Dhananjay pursued law at Delhi university in 1982 at a moment when few jobs were available to young law graduates. He served for a while as a junior advocate assisting judges and lawyers. Including framing some briefs for Fali Nariman. Chandrachud first worked at the law firm Sullivan and Cromwell,  after graduating from Harvard. He practised law at the Supreme Court of India and the Bombay High Court after returning to India. Chandrachud was appointed as a senior advocate by the Bombay High Court in June 1998. He was assigned as an additional solicitor General of India, a duty he held until his appointment as a judge. 

He was embellished as a judge at the Bombay High Court from March 29, 2000, till his appointment as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. Throughout this time, he was also the director of Maharashtra Judicial Academy. He was the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court from October  31, 2013, till assigned to the Supreme Court of India on May 13, 2016.

From April 24, 2021, onwards, he became a member of the Collegium of the Supreme Court of India. Which body consists of the five senior-most judges of the Supreme Court of India. Also responsible for the appointment of the judges in the Supreme Court of India all High Courts. He is the administrative chairperson of the National Legal Services Authority. On October 17, 2022, he was assigned as Chief Justice of India. After the retirement of the current Chief Justice, he is ready to become the 50th Chief Justice of India on November 9, 2022.

Chandrachud is an Indian lawyer who became a judge of the Supreme Court in May 13, 2016. He has worked as the 45th Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court (October 31, 2013- May 12, 2016) and Judge of Bombay High Court (March 29, 2000- October 30, 2013). In October 2022, UU Lalit nominated Chandrachud as his successor. 

DY Chandrachud’s father, Justice YV Chandrachud, was the 16th Chief Justice of India. Prabha Chandrachud, his mother, was a classical musician. He got married to Kalpana Das. Both have children named Abhinav Chandrachud and Chintan Chandrachud. 

His landmark Decision Till Now

In a landmark decision on February 2020, a bench headed by justice Chandrachud governs in favour of women officers in the army getting permanent commissions and command postings. Later another bench headed by him foreshadowed the way for granting permanent commissions to women officers in the Indian navy. 

He has confined landmark verdicts in the Ayodhya land title dispute. 

He was also on the benches that conveyed path-breaking decisions on decriminalising same-sex relations when they partly struck down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code on the so-called unnatural sex. Also, the validity of the Sabarimala temple issue and Adhaar Scheme. 

He headed a bench that recently broadened the scope of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act and corresponding rules to include transgender, unmarried women for abortion between 20-24 weeks of pregnancy.

He corresponds to the main judgement for a nine-judge constitution bench in the justice K S Puttaswamy versus Union of India Case, in which it was collectively held that the Right to Privacy constituted a Fundamental Right. 

Justice Chandrachud led the bench passing a direction to alleviate the hardship faced by a person during the pandemic crisis. 

Currently, Justice Chandrachud was among the two judges of the Apex court Collegium who opposed the method of ‘Circulation’ adopted for obtaining the views of its members on the assignment of the judges to the top court.

Chandrachud was also a member of the landmark decision by a five-judge constitution bench which acknowledged the ‘Living Will’ made by terminally-ill patients for huge Euthanasia.

A bench headed by Chandrachud had ordered the destruction of realty major Supertech’s twin 40-storeyed town in Noida believed illegal for a violation of norms.
