Smriti Irani

Amethi is a Lok Sabha/Parliamentary constituency in the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh. It covers the entire district of Amethi. The Amethi constituency created in 1967. It is one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in the State of Uttar Pradesh.

It’s a General category parliamentary seat, which consists of the entire CSJM Nagar district.

According to reports, the rural general constituency of Amethi has an estimated population of 26.61% of Scheduled Caste and around 0.02% estimated population of Scheduled Tribe. 

As per the reports, the estimated literacy rate of Amethi is approximately 63.62%. Speaking of the 2019 elections, the total number of voters from this seat were around 1741034. 

While the total number of eligible electors in 2019 from the seat were approximately 1718401. If we talk about the Polling Booth, in the year 2019, a total number of 1963 Booths were recorded. 

Amethi Lok Sabha Constituency Previous Elections 

Speaking of 2019 elections, the seat won by a BJP candidate, Smriti as she received 468,514 votes. Resulting her opponent, Rahul Gandhi stood at the second position as he received 4,13,394 votes. 

However, in 2014’s elections, Rahul Gandhi won the seat. Resulting he defeated his opponent BJP candidate Smriti by the margin of 1,07,903 votes. The margin were 12.34% of the total votes polled in the constituency. At the time, there were a total of 34 contestants who stood from the seat.

Coming to 2009’s elections, once again Rahul Gandhi emerged as the winner from the seat. He won against a BSP candidate by the margins of 3,70,198 votes. Resulting, he defeated another 16 contestants who stood from the seat.

The margins were 71.78% of the total votes polled in the constituency. The voter turnout in the 2014 Parliamentary polls in the seat was 52.39% and in 2009, the constituency registered 45.16% turnout during polling.

Who won from Amethi Lok Sabha Constituency in 2019 

Although the seat of Amethi has always been held by the Indian National Congress (INC) Party. But in the 2019 elections, the MP, who emerged victorious from the seat was of Bharatiya Janata Party.

In the 2019 elections, Smriti Irani, who’s the candidate of BJP won the seat by receiving 468,514 votes and became the MP from Amethi. Resulting, She defeated all the other 28 candidates who stood from the seat from various political parties.

Current MP of Amethi 

The current MP of Amethi constituency is Smriti Zubin Irani.Smriti is an Indian politician and a former television actress and producer. Irani is a Minister in the Union Cabinet of India since May 2019.

She joined the Bharatiya Janata Party back in 2003. In 2004, Irani was appointed as the Vice-president of Maharashtra Youth Wing. At the time, she participated in the elections from the Chandni Chowk constituency in Delhi. In 2011, she become the member of Rajya Sabha from Gujarat.

She’s currently administrating the Ministries of Women and Child Development as well as the Ministry of Minority Affairs. 

Smriti assumed her parliamentary office on May 23, 2019. She Preceded the office by Rahul Gandhi. Speaking about Rahul Gandhi, Amethi constituency had been always represented by the members of Gandhi family for the last 4 decades.

When was the First Parliamentary Elections Held in Amethi? 

The first elections from the seat of Amethi took place in 1967. At the time, Vidya Dhar Bajpai, a candidate of INC party won the elections by receiving 63,231 votes and emerged as the MP from the Seat.

Resulting, Bajpai was re-elected in 1971 from the seat. In 1967, a total of 5 contestants from various political parties stood from Amethi for the Lok Sabha seat.

Vidhya Dhar was succeeded by a Janata Party’s candidate Ravindra Pratap Singh in the year 1977.

As per 2011 Census, a total of SC voters from Amethi’s seat is around 461,374 that is approximately 26.5%. While the ST voters from the seat is around 0 which is 0%. 

According to the same Census, the rural voters from the seat is around 1,666,170 which is approximately 95.7%. While the Urban voters is around 74,864 i.e, approximately 4.3%. 

Presently, Amethi parliamentary constituency consists of 5 Vidhan Sabha (Legislative assembly) segments such as Tiloi, Salon, Jagdishpur, Gauriganj and Amethi.

The constituency of Amethi is surrounded by north via Barabanki and Faizabad, by West via Rae Bareli, by east via Sultanpur and by South via Pratapgarh.
