Mankading and Spirit of Cricket are the two certain term which we have heard too much in the past few days. Mankading came in highlight in India W vs England W 3rd One Day International. Indian women cricket team all-rounder Deepti Sharma run-out the opposition batter Charlotte Dean at non-striker end. England batter Charlotte Dean left the crease before the bowler when she was about to release the ball. The controversy began when people started calling it against the Spirit of Cricket. Many former cricketers argue that it is against the Spirit of Cricket. Spirit of Cricket emphasis on being fair, positive, self-disciplined. Is mankading really against the Spirit of Cricket? Why Mankading is the issue?

In the 3rd One Day International against England. Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma run out the Charlotte Dean at the non-striker’s end. The controversy begins from there only when on field umpire goes to upwards and asked third umpire to see the vision. The third umpire gave the signal out to Charlotte Dean. It was a heartbreak and nightmare for England. England were just 17 runs behind at that time with one wicket remaining.

Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma said “we have warned her several times before doing Mankading. 70% of the time she left the crease before the ball is bowled”.

We have saw this Mankading controversy in the IPL as well. Punjab Kings spin bowler Ravichandran Ashwin ran-out the Rajasthan Royals batsman Jos Butler at the non-striker end. At that time also the controversy erupted. Cricket fraternity were divided into their opinions in between the league. Former England cricketer and commentator David Lloyd said “MCC should have interfere in this matter. They should make sure that the warning must be given before doing Mankading. If still batter leaves his/her crease early then the bowler has the right to do Mankading.

Why it is called Mankading?

In 1948, India vs Australia test match, Indian player Vinoo Mankad run out the Australian batsman Bill Brown in the same fashion. Since, from that time it is called as Mankading. Some Indian cricketers are against this term as it disrespects the former cricketer Vinoo Mankad and the country. Indian players believe that it should be named as run-out instead of Mankading. Mankading will be known as run-out from 1st October 2022 after the issue has been taken to ICC.

What is the Law?

Under MCC Law 41.16.1, this type of run-out always comes under the rule but it is believed to be against the Spirit of Cricket. MCC Rule 41.16.1 says that if any batter leaves the crease before the ball is bowled by bowler, then the batter could get run-out by the bowler.

Former Indian Cricketer Wasim Jaffer wrote on twitter- It’s actually quite simple. Ball comes into play when bowler starts run up. From that moment on as a batter or non-striker you have to keep your eyes on the ball. If you are bit careless, opposition will get you out. And you can get out at either ends.

Former England cricketer and commentator Michael Vaughan wrote on twitter- Mankad is in the rules, but I hope it’s not a go too tactic… you surely don’t train all your lives to win a game using that tactic. I know batter should train to stay behind the line but it stinks seeing a game won like this.

Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle wrote on twitter- If you are outside the crease when the bowler is about to deliver a ball, you are either irresponsible or you are cheating. The bowler must run you out if she can.
