Virat Kohli Biography

Virat Kohli is an ambitious cricketer among all the great cricketers of the world. He is an Indian International Cricketer and former Captain of the India National Cricket team. Kohli is a right-handed batsman. He plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League and for Delhi in domestic cricket.

Kohli is one of the greatest batsmen of all time. He captained the Indian Cricket Team in 213 matches across all three formats between 2013-2022. Virat won 40 out of 68 matches. He is the most successful Indian Test Captain. Virat made his Test debut in 2011. He achieved the number one spot in the ICC rankings for ODI batsman for the first time in 2013. He has conducted Man of the Match twice at the ICC World Twenty20 in 2014 and 2016. Kohli also holds the world record of being speedy to 23,000 International runs. Kohli is a natural hostile batsman with powerful technical skills.

Kohli is the recipient of many accolades. The most notably Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy (ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Decade); in 2011-2020 and; Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy (ICC Cricketer of the Year) in 2017 and 2018. Also achieved ICC Test Player of the Year (2018), ICC ODI Player of the Year (2012,2017,2018), and Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World (2016,2017,2018). He was awarded with the Arjuna Award in 2013. The National level, Padma Shri in the sports category in 2017, and in 2018 Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna Award, which is the highest sporting honour in India.

Virat Kohli made his first-class debut for Delhi in opposition to Tamil Nadu at the age of 18; he scored 10 runs in his debut innings. He came to the limelight when he played against Karnataka the day after his father’s death, in which he scored 90 runs. 

Virat got selected for India Under-19 squad on the tour of England in 2006. He averaged 105 in three-match ODI series in opposition to England. And 49 in three-match Test series. He made his Twenty20 debut in 2007 and ended up as the highest run-getter for his team in the Inter-state T20 championship. Kohli and his Under-19 teammates Pradeep Sangwan and Tanmay Srivastava were awarded the Border Gavaskar Scholarship. Kohli captained the victorious Indian team at the 2008 Under-19 cricket World Cup, held in Malaysia in 2008. 

International Career

Kohli was included in the Indian ODI squad for a tour of Sri Lanka. At the age of 19 he made his International debut in the first ODI of the tour. He made his first half-century which is 54, in the fourth match. Kohli was selected as a replacement for the injured Shikhar Dhawan. He got the chance in India A squad for the unofficial Tests in opposition to Australia A in 2008. He batted once in the two-match series and scored 49 in the innings after he played for Delhi in the Nissar Trophy opposition to SNGPL ( Winners of the Quaid-i-Azam trophy from Pakistan) and topped scored for Delhi in both innings, having 52 and 197.

Kohli was named vice-captain, and Raina was a captain in the tri-series against Sri Lanka. They both continue the same role in Zimbabwe in May-June 2010. Kohli was retained in the ODI squad for a three-match series opposition to Australia. In the only completed series match at Visakhapatnam, he scored his third ODI century 118 off 121 balls. By becoming the Man of the Match, he stated that he was under pressure to remain in the position after failures in two previous series.

In Aisa Cup 2012, Virat Kohli was appointed as the vice-captain which held in Bangladesh. Kohli was captain for the first ODI of the triangular series in the West Indies. India lost the game by one wicket, and Kohli scored his first century as captain in the second match. He makes 102 off 83 balls. Kohli had a victorious time with the bat in the seven-match ODI series.

Virat Kohli got the opportunity to captain in an ICC tournament for the first time in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. In the semi-final against Bangladesh, Kohli gains 96, becoming the fastest batsman in terms of innings to achieve 8,000 runs in ODIs in 175 innings. But he lost in the final against Pakistan by 180 runs. 

He was titled captain of India’s squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He achieved the landmark in his 222nd innings. In the match, opposition to West Indies, Kohli emerged as the fastest batsman in terms of innings to score 20,000 runs in International Cricket. Kohli wins five consecutive fifty-plus scores in the tournament. 

Kohli declared he would step down as India’s T20I captain following the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in September 2021. In December 2021, Rohit Sharma replaced him as India’s ODI Captain. Kohli stepped down as India’s Test Captain following the 2-1 Test series beat against South Africa in the tour of South Africa on January 15, 2022.

Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise bought Virat Kohli for $30,000 on a youth contract following the Under-19 World cup. He was the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore for 8 seasons but could not win the trophy. In IPL 2020, he gained 466 runs in 15 games by an average of 42.36. His strike rate was 121.35. In opposition to Rajasthan Royals, Kohli became the first player to reach 6000 IPL runs on April 22, 2021. 

In season 2022, Kohli made 341 runs in 16 innings with an average of 21.31 and a strike rate to be 115. The match against Punjab Kings, he scored his 6500th IPL run. Kohli completed 7000 runs for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the last league match against Gujarat Titans.

Kohli was born on November 5, 1988, to a Punjabi Hindu family in New Delhi. His mother, Saroj Kohli, is a homemaker, and his father, Prem Kohli worked as a criminal lawyer. He has an older sister, Bhavna and an older brother Vikash. Kohli’s father passed away on December 18 2006, due to a stroke. The power couple Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma tied the knot in Italy on December 11, 2017. Anushka Sharma is an Indian actress. They both have a baby girl named Vamika.
