Rohit Sharma is an Indian International Cricketer and current captain of the Indian National Cricket team. Rohit owned all the blasts when he emerged from the Mumbai suburbs as heir apparent to the Indian batting greats of the 2000s. It took perseverance and time, but by 2010 he had become a giant in white ball cricket, and the man directing was the most chilling League team in the first age of T20. Rohit’s talent was recognizable to both the trained eye and the casual observer. Rohit had won five IPLs in the first 12 editions of the tournament, scored ODI double hundreds for fun, and scored five hundred at the 2019 ODI World Cup. And finally, when he got to open in tests in 2019, he had three quick hundreds in the first series, one of them a double. He proved himself an intellectual, methodological and calm leader.

Sharma presently holds the World record for the highest individual score (264) in a one-day International match. He is the only player to gain three double centuries in one-day Internationals. In IPL, he captains Mumbai Indians. He is a right-handed opening batsman—also an occasional right-arm off-break bowler. In domestic cricket, he plays for Mumbai. With a record of five times in IPL, Mumbai Indians have won the tournament under his leadership. Sharma has received two National Honours, the Arjuna Award in 2015 and the reputable Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2020. He achieved the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the year award in 2019 as he scored five centuries in the World Cup 2019.

Sharma forms his list A debut for the West Zone against the Central Zone in the Deodhar Trophy in March 2005 at Gwalior. He gained 31 not out as the West Zone won by 3 wickets with the remaining 24 balls. He made his first debut for India A in opposition to New Zealand at Darwin in 2006. Rohit scored 22 and 57 as India won by three wickets. In Mumbai, he made his Ranji Trophy debut in the 2006-2007 season. Mumbai went on achieving the tournament, with Sharma scoring a half-century (57) in his second-time innings in the final against Bengal. Sharma has consumed a first-class domestic career in Mumbai. 

International Career of Rohit Sharma

Test Matches

During Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell series in November 2013, Sharma made his Test debut at Eden Gardens in Kolkata in opposition to West Indies. He scored 177, which is the second-highest score on debut. Having been out of the Test team since 2017-18, Sharma moved to the 2018-19 tour of Australia after he gained a recall earlier. M S K Prasad, the Chief Selector stated the reason for his recall was that his natural play suited the bouncy Australian pitches. Rohit Sharma played his first Test in Adelaide, scoring 31 and 1 in an Indian victory. He suffered a minor injury in the first Test, for which he missed the Perth match. He recovered for the Boxing Day, the third Test at Melbourne, scoring 63. Sharma helped India to win both the Test and the series.

In the third Test against South Africa in 2019, Rohit Sharma achieved his 2,000th run and his first double century in Tests. Sharma was called vice-captain of India’s Test team during the Australia tour in 2020. In 2021 he had a successful away series in opposition to England in 2021. Sharma was designated Captain of India’s Test team in February 2022, succeeding Virat Kohli ahead of the two-match series opposition to Sri Lanka.

Sharma made his first presence at the Cricket World Cup in 2015. He played in eight matches for India in the 2015 tournament in Australia. India accomplished the semi-final stage, where Australia defeated them. He gained 330 runs and one century in the tournament. Sharma was appointed as the vice-captain of India’s squad for the World Cup of 2019 in England. He was the first batsman to score five centuries in a single World Cup tournament. Sharma counted 648 runs in the tournament to end as the leading run scorer and win the ICC’s Golden Bat Award, the third Indian player to do so. 

Other One-Day International Matches

Sharma creates his full International debut in a one-day match opposition to Ireland in Belfast. This was a part of the 2007 Future Cup competition which also involved South Africa. He is been the 7th number in the batting order but did not bat as India won the game by 9 wickets. He was recalled to the ODI team for the tri-nation tournament as Sachin Tendulkar chose to rest in the series. 

Sharma was appointed a team captain in December 2017 as Virat Kohli was rested for the series opposition to Sri Lanka. In 2018, in the absence of many top players, including Virat Kohli, Sharma, led India to win in 2018 Asia Cup where they beat Bangladesh in final. Sharma scored 133 in the opening match against Australia on January 12, 2019, but it was all in vain as India lost the match by 34 runs. That match, Sharma had his 22nd century in one-day Internationals. In July 2022, Rohit became known as the first captain to lead their team in T20 and ODI series success in England.

Twenty20 International Matches

Sharma was involved in Indian squad for the 2007 ICC World Twenty20. He made his mark by gaining an unbeaten 50 from 20 deliveries to opposition hosts South Africa in the quarter-finals. This empowered India to win the match by 37 runs, and further, they moved to defeat Pakistan in the final. During a series in England in 2018, Sharma became the second Indian batsman to score 2,000 runs in a Twenty20 International career after Virat Kohli. He was rank in fifth to achieve the feat. In 2018, he led the India team to win the Nidahas trophy under his captaincy. 

Sharma was proposed for the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Decade Award. He was the first captain to lead their team to 14 consecutive victories in T20I in 2022.

He joined the IPL in 2008. He was signed by the Deccan Chargers franchise based in Hyderabad for US$750,000 a year. In the auction of 2011, he was sold to Mumbai Indians for US$ 2 million. He achieved his only IPL century in the 2012 tournament in opposition to Kolkata Knight Riders which was 109 not out. Mumbai won the IPL in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 under his leadership. They also won the former Champions League Twenty20 Competition in 2013. He is one of six players who gained 5,000 career runs in the T20s. He is the third highest score runner after Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli. 

Achievements

Sharma clasps the World record for the highest individual score by a batsman playing in a one-day International match who scored 264 in opposition to Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on November 13, 2014. He is the only player to gain double centuries in the form of International cricket. The ICC International Cricket Council named Sharma the ODI Player of the year. He was the only batsman to have five centuries in a single edition of the Cricket World Cup during the 2019 World Cup.
